Driving up the Northern California coastline is at once beautiful and a bit thrilling. I kept being reminded of the car chase scene in "Basic Instinct". Narrow winding roads frequently without guardrails make for a truly exciting driving experience. Apparently the other drivers had been down this road before, and had little patience for slow drivers bearing North Carolina tags. The Redwoods were also striking. Following in the wake of the Grand Canyon, I felt I had been exposed to a glimpse of an older, more primordial world. Trees that were old when Europeans first began to wash up on America's shores, grandly creating a moss covered forest floor devoid of any direct sunlight. The air is remarkably clean, cool and moist, welcome after weeks on the highway. We spent the night in Eureka, then made our way on to Oregon. Next: New Pacifica |
