With teary eyes and almost giddy with anticipation at what the futureheld, we set off from Raleigh. Of course, we had to first eat in Durham, assuring us thatwe had the proper strength to embark on our voyage. We had a fast food meal just off theInterstate. When finished we strapped into the respective vehicles, verified our longrange walkie-talkies were working, and allowed the dogs to leave a parting gift. The VWbus would force its way back into the heavy traffic, with my car right behind it.
The bus forced its way into traffic, and for all intents vanished offthe face of the Earth.
We drove several miles down the interstate, turned back, searchedunsuccessfully, and finally got back on the road, confident they were ahead of us. Wedrove through the Southern part of North Carolina, and on into the cesspool known as SouthCarolina. No contact on the Walkie Talkies, no sign of the bus. We drove well into thenight, confused, but confident it would work out. By midnight we were well into Georgia, headed straight for Atlanta.
