At midnight, atop the Hoover Dam, the right rear tire blew out. Tomake things even better, as we initially inspected the damage, a Nevada state patrolmandeposits three men at the border, which was located about twenty feet from where westopped. We listened carefully as he apologized for having to confiscate their hand guns, but as that they were convicted felons he either had to take them back across the stateline, or arrest them.
The fix-a-flat squirted out the other side of the ruptured tread, anddid little beyond make a mess. The spare tire was of course buried in the trunk beneathseveral thousand dollars worth of all of our stereos, speakers, VCRs and televisions (itmay be a small car, but it has a big trunk). We unpacked it all in front of the solemnband of highwaymen and put on the spare. Fortunately, the patrolmen came back by to checkup on us. We managed to get back on the road without any trouble.
For at least thirty or forty miles you can see Vegas lighting up thenight sky. Its in the middle of a desert, and at night there is no other light besides theglowing neon.
